Texas Instruments makes calculators mainly for education. Hewlett Packard doesn't seem to make calculators at all. Is it really true that spreadsheet packages have completely replaced the handheld calculator? If not, then where are the calculators for professionals?
Calculated Industries makes a large range of specialized professional calculators for the construction trades, real estate, accounting, audio/visual and the culinary trades.
For the latter, CI offers the Model 8305 Kitchen Calc Pro, a four-function unit-based calculator for doing arithmetic with the incredibly arcane set of measures used in American kitchens. Add two teaspoons to one tablespoon to get 1-2/3 tablespoons. Or convert to 5 teaspoons. Did you know that was 7/8 fluid ounces?
More useful is the ability to rescale recipes based on number of servings or on portion size. Or both! Say your recipe yields four three-ounce portions and you need six four-ounce portions. Your original recipe called for 3 tablespoons of hot curry powder. How much hot curry powder will you need for the modified recipe?
Steps:
- [4] [Recipe # Servings]
- [6] [Actual # Servings]
- [3] [Recipe Portion Size]
- [4] [Actual Portion Size]
- [3] [tbsp]
- [Adjust Recipe]
Read off the adjusted value, 6 tablespoons.
The original recipe also called for 5 cups of water. How much water will the modified recipe require?
Steps:
- [5] [cup]
- [Adjust Recipe]
- Read the result, 2-1/2 quarts
- [Conv] [cup]
- Read the equivalent result, 10 cups
The calculator will recall the recipe settings until a Clear All function is pressed, even if the calculator is turned off. The calculator will round off odd values to the nearest commonly-sized measuring spoon (the manufacturer knows you don't have a 2/3 tablespoon measure). You are alerted when this happens and a quick keystroke will tell you the size of the roundoff error if you think it's important.
The unit includes two count down/count up timers which run independently and can be used while using the calculator for other purposes.
