  • Type: Semi-Algebraic Electronic Calculator
  • Size: 3 x 5 inches / 8 x 13 cm

A calculator remarkable only in the price I paid for it: one cent. This represents 1/25000th of what I paid for the most expensive slide rule in the collection. Now you can see why you can't get a good slide rule anymore. While they look pretty, the keys refract the underlying labels, making them very hard to read.

[edit] Basic Forensic Data

The KS-105 is an 10-digit LCD display calculator. Calculations are done to 12 digits. Mike Sebastian's Calculator Forensics algorithm, asin(acos(atan(tan(cos(sin(9 degrees)))))), gives the result 8.99999863704 which is the same as the "Generic 56-function Calculator" that comes up in a number of guises. (This number also pops up in some surprising non-generic units, such as the HP-6S.) This unit looks similar to the Sharp EL-501, especially in the way you enter and read complex numbers.

The circuit board has a part number 1058-N-1 (Ver. 3) but the chip is hidden under the inevitable dollop of epoxy. The clock is independent of the calculator; it's just the little 10-cent clock that gets stuck onto every tschotschke in the known universe. The leftmost pair of red keys set and control the clock.

Complex numbers are supported in the four basic functions only. Please do not attempt to take the square root of -1; the unit will become angry. The value in the memory register and the angular mode are preserved. Everything else is reset at power off.
