With instruction book, hard shell case, instruction manual and CDROM containing a technical manual and a backup of the canned applications preinstalled on the unit. I think this is the calculator Darth Vader used. (We all know the rebels used RPN calculators...) This is the unit TI brought out to go tête-á-tête with the HP-49g+. Well, actually, this is the improved version of that unit. It's remarkable how similar the two units are (at least if you have the HP-49g+ in algebraic mode). We can't really accuse them of borrowing ideas from each other, though, can we?

While not great, the physical unit is better than the 49, especially in the keyboard department. The 89 relies more on pulldown menus that are usually attached to the soft function keys than using those keys for actual functions. This can make it a little harder to call up a specific function than on the 49. To compensate, TI moved a number of basic numerical functions back to the main keyboard.

If only TI would add an RPN operating mode, this would be a real winner. But let's look at the bright side: You can add a USB keyboard, and with a little conversion software on your PC, create Microsoft Word documents! Calculator, indeed!
